The growth strategy

  • Started in 2018, growth over artwork
  • Compound effect while it lasted
  • Techniques evolved as Instagram closed each loophole

This project started in 2018 with one goal: growth-hack an Instagram account, ahead of the artwork itself. At the time there was a real compound effect — once followers started coming in, they kept coming, until Instagram changed its algorithm or flagged a growth technique as boosting.

Aside from the obvious tips — posting at consistent times, posting when an audience is actually online, using hashtags — which get taken for granted and aren't worth repeating, the account moved through several distinct growth techniques as each one lost effectiveness. What follows is that evolution.

Follow back

  • Follow your whole niche at once
  • Notification puts the account in front of them
  • Caps out around 5,000 followers

As the name implies, follow back involves following as many people in your industry as possible. They then follow back because they get a notification, which puts the account in front of them and “shows that you exist.” It works up to around 5,000 followers, for two reasons: you can only follow a certain number of people per day, and Instagram capped the total you can follow at around 10k at the time. Past that point the ratio stops looking good — 5,000 followers against 10,000 followed doesn't read as an account worth following.

03

The community method

  • Comment groups, timed to the first minutes
  • Signals the algorithm before it decides who sees a post
  • Outlasted follow back once accounts got bigger

Once follow back stopped moving the needle, growth came from small private groups of accounts in the same niche — a dozen or so pages of a similar size, coordinating in a group chat to comment on each other's posts within minutes of publishing. Instagram weighs engagement in that early window heavily when deciding how far to push a post beyond its existing followers, so a burst of real comments right at the start reads as a post worth showing to more people.

Unlike follow back, this scaled past 5,000 followers, since it didn't depend on a following-to-follower ratio — it depended on having a handful of active accounts willing to show up for each other, post after post.

Scheduling, auditing, and staying consistent

  • Later and Planoly for a visual content calendar
  • Hypeauditor to keep the follower base honest
  • Consistency mattered more than any single trick

Later and Planoly took over the day-to-day: laying posts out on a visual grid ahead of time, queuing captions and hashtag sets, and keeping a posting schedule consistent through six years of algorithm changes without relying on memory. Hypeauditor ran on the other side, auditing the account's own follower base for bot activity and engagement quality — the same growth techniques that bring real followers in also attract fake ones, and worth knowing which is which before trusting the numbers.

05

From growth tactics to a visual identity

  • Glitch-art statues, generic no more
  • Dead Internet Theory as a recurring thread
  • The name finally matches the feed

Growth tactics get an account followers; they don't give it a reason to be remembered. The feed settled into a distinct style — classical statues and portraits run through a deliberate glitch, corrupted like a decaying video signal — carried by a recurring theme lifted from Dead Internet Theory: abandoned pages, dormant forums, and the digital debris left behind by a web that has moved on. It's the first version of the account where the name GlitchPixel actually describes what shows up in the grid.

GlitchPixel Instagram Insights, weekly reach and follower breakdown

Six years in, the account sits at 71.5k followers across 171 posts, still growing. On a typical week, the majority of reach — around 86% — comes from accounts that don't follow yet, the clearest sign that the content itself, not just the growth tactics that got it off the ground, is what keeps pulling new people in. The account tracks its own numbers publicly in its Highlights, down to a “Road to 1M” reel counting toward the next milestone.
